Eight Ingenious Ways To Save Money And The Environment In One Action!

Jan 20th, 2012 James McHeggins

Everyone wants to save money and everyone wants to do their bit for the environment. Now, it is possible to do both. There are loads of ways that you can be greener and save cash at the same time. Here are eight simple ways to save both your money and the Earth.

Switch to a green energy tariff

Many of the leading energy suppliers offer a so called green tariff. These are price plans which commit to a certain level of environmental sustainability. For example, an energy company may only provide gas and electricity to you from renewable sources (such as water or wind power). Or, a company may contribute to a green energy fund on your behalf to develop further environmentally friendly energy.

As well as helping the environment, these price plans can also often save you money. Many of them are no more expensive than standard dual fuel plans and so you can switch to a new energy supplier at the same time as benefiting from a green tariff.

Drive more carefully

It is possible to use less petrol or diesel by improving your driving techniques. Do not accelerate and brake hard, drive within the speed limit and remove the roof rack from your car when you are not using it. Using the electrics in your car (such as the air conditioner) can also increase fuel usage. By making small changes to the way you drive you will use less fuel and save money.

Save energy at home and work

One of the easiest ways to reduce your expenditure and to help the environment is to be more energy efficient at home and work. Turn off lights, do not use the heating more than you have to and do not leave electrical appliances on standby.

Use your library

Rather than spending a fortune on books, CDs and DVDs, why not borrow them from your local library? As well as saving a significant sum of money you will help stop increased paper and plastics ending up in landfill.

Adjust your computer settings

The vast majority of computers are not optimised for energy efficiency. So, make sure you utilise the sleep and hibernate settings and turn your PC off if you do not plan to use it for an hour or more.

Grow your own

Whether your garden is big or small, it is possible to grow your own fruit, vegetable and herbs at home. You do not have to spend a fortune on expensive gardening equipment you can take cuttings or seeds from neighbours or friends. As well as saving money on your grocery bill, you can benefit from fresh, organic produce that does not come with thousands of food miles.

Save paper

Saving paper will cut your stationery bills as well as helping the environment. Make sure you print on both sides of a page and make sure your printer settings are optimised. And, you can use rough or scrap paper for notes and shopping lists. Do not forget also to recycle your old newspapers, magazines and scrap paper.

Use rechargeable batteries

Rechargeable batteries are a great way of saving money over time. Whilst they may cost you more than standard batteries initially, you are likely to save a significant amount over time by using rechargeable batteries. They are also much better for the environment.

So there you have it, most of the tips are so simple you are probably kicking yourself you did not think about them earlier! But the above only represents the tip of the iceberg, searching the web you will no doubt come up with hundreds of other ways to save money and energy.
